| What do the directories actually do for you? Do people really go to blog directories and search for blogs?

I agree, BlogCatalog has been a boost for my blogs. So has general link building strategies such as directory submission, press releases, forum sigs, social bookmarking, and some article marketing.

you said : "Then I'd comment on relevant blogs particularily ones that get lots of traffic and activity. Make good relevant comments." thanks for that, I always feel that any genuine community based activity is a reflection of what you are and therfore what your blog is about but I hear mixed reviews about how useful commenting is, I'm gonna keep commenting on relevant blogs Grant |

Do lot's of quality forum posting and then start building your blogroll as others have said. A friend of mine did NO LINK BUILDING but ONLY blogroll exchanges and got to over 400,000 backlinks. Remember if you aren't in an SEO related field people love doing blogroll it's natural linking so go for it just only do it with your niche if you ask me.

Well this is the 64 thousand dollar question! The answer, of course, isn't any one thing you can do to drive traffic to your website, it's a huge number of things that you do consistently. Any of which can produce the results you seek. Great content, of course, is up there on that list. Since you have such lofty traffic goals, it really comes down to your readers, and capturing the email addresses of the ones that make it to the site and reminding them to come back. RSS is a great way, as is opt-in email subs. I would advise against paying ANYTHING for any traffic. Build it organically, since paid traffic is almost worthless- it bumps your numbers up but if you analyze that you see that most (90+ percent) Bounce as soon as they hit your site, and most never come back. You want targeted traffic, people who were looking for the information that you provided to begin with. Those people will stay on the site, bookmark you, possibly take advantage of a great offer they see on an ad in your page. Save your cash and invest your time- this forum is a great place to get ideas, tips and ways to optimize your efforts. (I didn't know what a KEI was before coming here...) I've written a Squidoo lens with ways to drive traffic to your website, but be warned, none are quick fixes or overnight traffic secrets, they all require work in the form of time & effort, but aside from that not a single idea will cost you a cent! Conserve your cash and spend your time is what I say! Only spend $ when your blog is earning you money, and then track your ROI just as you would with any business.

I'm really new to this too, so I don't even know how to build links yet. I've signed up for everything though...... Technorati, Traffic Swarm and all sorts of other stuff. To be honest though, I haven't got the faintest idea how to get my site out there to the masses. |
