What can hurt you are the links you have going out. Keep them topical to your site, don't try to have too many, if possible use 'nofollow' (I use that for most of my directory links. They only seem to check if the image is being downloaded). If you link to a bunch of other sites, consider putting them all on one page, not having them on every page.
Linking to a PR0 CAN hurt you, but it depends on the site itself. For instance, illegal sites, porn, etc...

Thanks for all of the tips folks, many of the things mentioned I currently do my blog is still relatively new so I guess I was just anxious and looking for that "golden gateway" to page rank. I now see that there really is not a secret to quick page rank, just time and work and lots of reading

No. A link cannot hurt your page rank for the reason I gave. You cannot control incoming links.

If that were true, people would start porn sites and start trying to offensively destroy other sites.

I would rather have a link on a related page thats PR0, than a link from a non related page with a higher PR.

I'm not sure if PR is really worth all the extra hassle, especially if you're actually indexed in the search engines. But for a long while my blog was a PR0 and of course when I kept preaching that PR doesn't mean too much, they bumped me to a PR4... well, I'm not doing anything different so it's not really changing me...

I see PR now as a means of saying google trust that the site is a good net citizen. Not necessarily to increase rankings but if someone has a PR0 which is a manual penalty it's a fair assumption that de-indexing is the next stop on the line...

Of course, I'm sure you would REALLY need to cross the lines for them to de-index you. I'm not suggesting that lol... but all I'm saying is PR is not the same to show "how important" a website is.
