This is, in general, a good idea. Keep in mind, though, that each site you create must have external links coming to it in order for it to have much SEO oomph. A blog that isn't linked to from anywhere won't give another site much benefit.

So in a sense, you now have two sites you need to promote, rather than just one. But if you were going to do both sites anyway, definitely link from one to the other to get that boost.
