Does anyone here comment on other bloggeries as a form of promotion? If so what criteria do you have for selecting blogs worthy of commenting on?
I comment on bloggeries that I feel are good quality and from blogs that are respectable. I dont' post that many comments and maybe I should do more. I spoke with someone who is very experienced and he said if you took the time to read it and have something to say... Do it! It's good if your domain is brandable because you can then use the domain as your name and link it to the domain. i.e if I post a comment I post as Bloggeries. I'm mentioning this as I was looking through some referrer stats and noticed one comment I made gave me a good number of targeted uniques. Looking forward to hearing about your experience with commenting on bloggeries as a form of blog promotion. Thanks, Rob

Partly because I am really good at distracting myself by visiting other blogs, and party because I seem to always have an opinion or something to say, I frequently comment on other blogs.
Sometimes I comment on their blog, sometimes I will post a comment about their blog on mine with a link to their post. It's a good way to network with like-minded bloggers, and you can have fun some fun back and forth jokes sometimes, and I love jokes. And since the blogger took the time to write a post that captured my attention, I want to reward them with a thoughtful comment. Because a non-spam comment is rewarding to a blogger, and the comment will be a reward to you as well. For example: I frequently comment on www.izzatz.com and (as I am in an seocontest) he recently added me to his link partners pages to help me with the seocontest, and has given me some sound SEO advice too. The only thing is, since I was so busy reading his blog and commenting, it only dawned on me a few days ago to ask! But imagine my excitement at having a link in a blog that has been in my BlogRoll for two months now! And that is what I get for posting a few comments here and again on one of my favourite blogs!

I comment on other blogs as both a form of promotion and just because I enjoy doing it. I have a wide range of interests that I read about, and if I enjoy something I read, or feel I can add to it, I will comment.
When looking to use xomments as a form of promotion I look for ones related to my niche. Readers of that niche are probably also looking for other related sites. Sometimes, if I don't really feel these blogs, it takes a little more effort to leave a quality comment. The point with comments is, if you offer quality feedback, at least the sites owner, and probably it's readers will follow your link to see more of what you have to say. If your site is valuable to them they will stick around long term.

I agree Lenny with all you said.
While it is important I think to comment on blogs that have similar subject matter, I think it is important that they have a similar "mood" as well. As I am a playful person and my blog is playful as well, I sometimes avoid posting comments in more serious blogs, even though they might be specifically related to the subject of my blog. |

I've been commenting on other blogs, not so much as a form of promotion (although it started that way), but to help the other blogs continue to do well. Comments on a post on Self Made Minds made me realize that if I wanted people to frequent my blog, I needed to be willing to do the same for others.
So I've been frequenting those that I find interesting, and commenting when I have something to add, and in general trying to be far less insular than I was. Jay |

Ya, I have been commenting frequently on others blogs or different fora.
Recently I have read that such comments are helpful from SEO point of view only if you link in the comment doesn't carry "rel=nofollow". Now I am thinking of stopping comments on those forums, which apply this tag automatically. Any comments? Am I right ? |

From an SEO point of view in terms of establishing relevancy and increasing page rank, that's correct. "nofollow" links do not contribute to your site from a search engine perspective.
That doesn't mean comments there are wasted. Some blogs have a top commentators list (I just recently put this on mine) and those links are follow links. Also, people will often click through to your site from a comment, and if they like what they see may link back with a follow link or post a review. So while there's no direct SEO benefit, there's still a lot of indirect benefit even if comments are "nofollow". Jay |

When your site is lowpagrank I say taking no follow off might be ok(although i doubt it) but when your site goes high PR you don't want to be giving free PR to your competitor bloggers.

The main page of your blog and each sub page / your individual bloggeries all have their own PR. Once a post is archived it will get it's own PR eventually and believe it or not quality comments on topic help increase the PR of that page. Also whatever comments are on it are only from that 1 page's PR so it's not that big a deal I don't think.
I think it all depends on the # and quality of posts you're getting. IF you run a massively popular blog that has no comment moderation I'd say nofollow would be a great idea but apart from that why not?
