Default Do Unto Others...

I love seeing comments on my bloggeries. So whenever I am surfing and come across a blog that I enjoy, I try to take the time to tell them! I am naturally opinionated and sometimes I just have to put in my two cents.

Sometimes, I specifically try to find blogs that have something in common with mine for the purposes of promoting my blog. But, I only leave comments that are a real reflection of my opinion. Even before I heard of "Spam comments", it just did not seem right to leave generic comments solely for the purpose of promoting myself/my blog. I don't leave a comment at all if I am not moved by the bloggerie.

It seems a natural way to network with like minded people. I have found a few online buddies as a result of this practice.

Networking seems to me to be reciprocal, whereas spam commenting seems to be just exploitation of someone else's work.

Alas, it is time consuming, so I try to do it when I have the time to just have fun online.

That's the truth! When I have a project ongoing, I tend to slack off on blog comments. I always notice a drop in traffic to my blog during those periods, too (probably because I'm still in the stage where I have little enough traffic as it is, every bit counts).

Hi Jay,

Doesn't matter how much traffic you have you'll find that the larger your site grows the more litte streams start coming until you have a nice pool. Every bit still counts, I get 15-35 uniques on average a month from a few well posted blog comments. I got ~20,000 + Uniques last month and the largest searched term / referrer was ~620 uniques!! I have tones of little channels bringing in ~15-50 uniques a month. It's just nuts but also good if your traffic is diversified you have less risk as if anyone source goes kaput your still doing well; kinda like investing.

Most of the time I just can't help myself I"m a social guy and feel the impulse to say my $0.02 even when not asked. (Kinda like this post )

Yeah. Me, too. I admit I spend time surfing and commenting just for fun. I love the internet. But I do need to bead some jewelry, and take care of business, or I won't have any business to take care of!

Agreed! It's very easy to get caught up doing things on the internet which may help but are not your core business. Often functions that are the least "glamorous" and fun tend to be closest to the core unfortunately!

Most of the traffic that comes to my site are from other blogs that I commented on. I notice that my comments that are well versed on the subject at hand seem to attract people to my blog more than just saying a quick "good post" or "lol".

Also, I notice that if the webmaster is fond of responding to my comments this tends to drive alot of traffic from his/her site to my site. I guess people think that if the webmaster is paying attention to me then my blog might be worth checking out.

You do make some good points, and I do try to leave quality comments now and then...

I get a fair amount of my traffic from the forums I participate on. I get pretty good traffic from Squidoo as well. Maybe I don't leave comments on other blogs often enough...that is a good excuse to surf! I'll take it.

I like to leave comments for topics that I am fond of. I do not think much about traffic although I can confirm that good comments bring both the traffic and subscribers.

Regarding nofollow or no, stop thinking about it and just write what's on your mind. There have been many experiments showing that google actually follows nofollow links.
