| I plan on buying a .com from namecheap and I was wondering how many years I should register the name for. It's 9.98 a year for every year, so should I take it one year at a time. Will the price change dramatically from year to year? what do you guys do? |

I always have paid my domain per year. But for a domain that I estimate I will use a very long time, I pay 3 years all at once.. |

I bought my domains for 2 years, and I'm coming up almost exactly on my 2 year anniversary, and just renewed. I almost wish I'd bought it for longer. Blogging really isn't a short-term experience if you love your blog. Two years have flown by. (Link to my blog in signature)

I don't think the price will change. I renew my domain annually. |

Hi uf.tutor6, I recommend you buy the domain for 1 or 2 years. The prices don't change too much. You can renew your domain anytime you want. |

As others have said, it's unlikely that the prices will spike dramatically, but it will most likely to be a little more every year. If I'm 100% sure it will be a long-term project, I usually buy for 3 years or so, but if I have any doubts I just take it year to year. I'm not familiar with namecheap but sometimes you can get a good discount for registering for a few years at a time. Another (less important) point to mention is that some people say domains registered for a longer amount of time help your search engine rankings. I've never really seen any evidence, though, and that probably shouldn't be a deciding factor.

Start with one year is better, you don't know what will happen in the future, work, family, children, someday you will have very limited time on blogging.

I renew all my domains annually - they are however all on auto renewal so I don't need to remember to do so which makes life a lot easier. All I get is notfication that my registered credit card needs replacing when it expires. |

The price won't change too much. You do get discounts for renewing for longer amounts of time, but I wouldn't suggest that until you're for sure you will be using that domain for a long while.
