I know that there are tons of blog directories out there, and I'm on a couple of them such as Technorati and Collegeblender. I don't think that I've gotten any traffic from Technorati, but I've heard its good to put your site on there anyway. Collegeblender has been pretty good at referring traffic (my site is about college). Which other free directories have generated good traffic for you?

It is a myth to think that you'll get a ton of traffic with directories. For the most part, submitting your site to a ton of directories will do almost nothing for you - many directories are nothing more than link farms. Google will not give you a high page rank out of a bunch of link farms - Their algorithms have gotten smarter than that. And for the most part, you'll get very little traffic from a directory. Google and Bing will still give most people their largest chunk of organic traffic. There are a few high ranked directories that will >selectively< accept url submissions, and may help page rank. alltop.com and/or dmoz.org are directories with a high page rank - These directories are selective about what urls they take. By the way, having even suggested two directories, I'm think chasing directory submissions is a waste of time. Put that energy into writing great content!

Thanks for the input Melody! I didn't know that certain sites are useful in ranking and others are not. What your saying sounds totally legitimate and actually encouraging. It makes sense that someone would get more traffic for the content and not just for the pure number of links on random sites. However, I have actually gotten a decent amount of traffic from Collegeblender. So if a directory fits your nitch I think it can be useful.

I have very little success with dmoz - but maybe it was only with me. people say that dmoz is fine but I got no traffic at all from it although I have placed about 20 articles there.

The only thing that blog directories do - and this is only a maybe - is perhaps help increase page rank. But that's not always the case. Chasing after a bunch of unranked or 0 ranked directories will get you nowhere. Only a few directories really help rank. It's a myth that chasing after blog directories is going to help your blog. You're better off working on great content that gets natural backlinks.

The only directory in my areas of interest that I've really found to be worth browsing is Blotanical, a directory _and community_ of garden bloggers. And I think that it's not coincidence that that's also the only directory that I've ever gotten any traffic from. |

There are quite a few blog directories out there; however, one of the greatest is Technorati.com. While some people feel it is a little too technical and not marketing-centered enough, it's a great place to go to find blogs on almost every topic you can think of. They list blogs focused on business, entertainment, lifestyle and politics.

My understanding of it is blogs do work. One way is to boost your SERPs for a particular keyword: Do a search to find blogs that have pages/posts that are already ranking well for a specific term, and then leave a comment using the term on that same page with your link. |

According to me, the best Blog Directory is Bloggers.com, where thousands of active bloggers build their connections with other related niche bloggers. Luv it! :-) |
