Why Link exchanges/ directory submissions are a waste of your time

At bloggeries, people come along and say "you should submit your blog to directories to build links" - Maybe that was good advice 5 years ago but today it is not. Unfortunately, many bloggers don't realize that Google and other search engine have become amazingly good at weeded out quality links from non quality links. You just waste your time submitting your site to a million directories:

Wow! I'm embarrassed to say that I've actually tried all of these methods. I've used automated directory submitters, article submissions, and did a few link exchanges but I have not noticed an increase in traffic from any of those methods. Guest Posting, Video Blogs, social bookmarking, and writing press releases is definitely the way to go if you want to build backlinks these days.

There must be some truth in what you say because I have submitted to a few directories and never got any traffic from them.
