I've heard about StumbleUpon.com and how it could be beneficial to promote my site. So I signed up and checked it out, but cannot figure out how it would benefit me... Do I have to submit my blog to the site somewhere?

I think you can submit your RSS feed or something like that.

I started using StumbleUpon recently, and I think it's tons of fun to use. If you have a SU button on your blog, you can submit it that way, which is how I do it. If you don't have one, I definitely recommend getting one! You can also go to your Favorites page on SU and click the "Add a site" button.

I stumble every new post on my blog, but I haven't all that much success with SU. I mostly use it for finding new sites to tweet about.

Define your target audience and press the " I like it" button on pages related to your pages or on pages where there are links back to your website. There's also a paid solution. If you choose this one, StumbleUpon indexes your website and displays it adequately when it's the case.

I too am still confused by SU. I had an SU button my blog and continue have an SU page for myself but have never seen any returns from SU. I wonder what I am doing wrong? I took the SU and Digg button off blog when I was not seeing any traffic.
