I haven't because I'm not selling any products or anything, so by using adwords, I would be losing money I could use for another service to enhance my site. I am focusing on SEO at the moment in order to increase my keyword serps and get more organic traffic from search engines.

Yes - It works for the content platform (i.e. adsense). But you must keep up with constant changes that Google adopt, and carefully use keywords (e.g. negative keywords) for your campaigns; Otherwise you can go over your budget. I learnt by reading/adopting articles from search engine land, which has contributors form those that make a living from adwords.

I used it once for a project when I had a free $100 credit. I didn't pick good keywords, clicks cost me a ridiculous amount, my visitors didn't stick around and I quickly canceled my campaign before it started costing me real money. So not successfully, haha.
