So I'm a poor young blogger with stars in his eyes wanting to break through that glass ceiling. But I have no idea what is the best way to go about advertising a blog. Any suggestions? Blog: Maddening Thoughts of a Rambling Gentleman |

You could submit to directories, and I have found that some of my posts rank in the serps. Problem is though, too many blogs (of good quality content) are saturating directories; Also I have found that some of my directory post rank higher or close to my actual blog - which means targeted visitors might click on those directory links then end up navigating the actual directory - rather than your blog directly.

Yeah, directories can be a decent way to advertise as long as the directories themselves aren't of the spammy link farm-type variety. Definitely check them out for yourself and go for quality rather than quantity. It looks like you have a pretty good personal-type blog, but this can be the toughest to advertise since you lack a clear niche in which to network. I think getting involved in forums is about the best things you can do at this stage, and you're definitely in the right place. Have you tried Blog Catalog? It's a big blog directory combined with a social networking site. I've found it can be pretty good for traffic if you take some time to make meaningful comments.
