One of the clients that I help has a blog that centers around inspirational thoughts. He had a really popular reader base until he realized that his blog was going to downhill and he couldn't figure out why. Here was his problem: he stopped centering his posts around his theme of inspirational thoughts. He started posting things about politics and business topics. Even though he was a great writer, he forgot why he had those readers in the first place. They were there to read about his inspirational thoughts and were not intersted in his other topics. Once you have your blog, stick to your theme, or you'll be shooting yourself if the foot! Best of luck to you all! |

That is very good advice! Also it's a good reminder to blog about something you passionately love ... it will make it easier to keep posting about the same thing over and over again.

Perhaps he should create other blogs/sites that relate to other interests, or write for other sites for those interests. I subscribe to SEO articles written by SEO experienced writers, and many also write for other sites and their own blogs.

Very true! Bloggers do need to remember to stay focused most of all. If they do wish to branch out into a new topic the best they can do within the same blog is to try and relate it back to their main theme somehow. If they do really want to talk about different things then it is time to start thinking about a new blog all together with a new theme and new readers. Many great bloggers maintain more than one blog and in my opinion it helps keep you from running out of ideas.

the trick is keeping to your theme/niche, but incorporating other interests you have. For instance if you have a parenting blog but also like technology, you could write a post like "6 Great Gadgets to Use With Your Kids"

I agree, but its hard to write somthing new and interesting about the theme if that theme does not really alter. For instance writing about football there will be new things to talk about every day because of how much it changes on a day to day basis. Where as if you choose Cheese, however interesting the subject may be to you, there is surly only so much you can write. So really, there is a fine line between your blog runing out of steam and going off topic, I believe you have to have a bit of diversity in your blog to keep a good content level I'm now realising why there are so many now homeless blogs out there!! |
