Default Blog directories - how much is too much ?

Hi there,

I'm trying to promote my new Wordpress blog a bit and thought it'd be useful to add it to some blog directory. Problem is... which ones ?

A simple google search showed a lot of them ! I registered with what I think are the main ones, but I noticed two trends :

- Lots of blog directories aren't free : not sure it worth the money in many case
- Others are PG0 : will they really help my blog ?

What do you think ?

Outside of bloggeries and a few of the other big dir's, I'm not sure it's really worth submitting to all of them especially if their page rank is low. A lot of dirs being penalized by google now. You might be better off concentrating on backlinks from social bookmark sites and technorati favorite exchanges.

Best of luck

Lightbulb Submitting to Blog Directories

Submitting your blog to blog directories is easy; just do it properly.

I wouldn't submit to any of the free PR0 ones. They will do nothing for you.

Sign up for a couple of free and or paid BLOG ONLY directories that are well penetrated throughout the market and popular in terms of traffic. Resource sites are always best as they tend to attract people over and over again.

When you sign up pay extra special attention for the anchor text or said otherwise keywords that you use. A major reason for directory submission is to target specific keywords so you can hopefully rank for them in search engines.

Rome1 is correct; recently many general directories got penalized for a whole host of theoretical reasons. Stick to niche directories as they were, are now and always will be much more relevant. There are many quality blog directories out there; chose the right ones to submit to.

A few good blog directory submissions with well chosen keywords will reap much larger benefits than a sloppy one on numerous lousy sites.

Best of luck!
Rob

Make sure you change up your title and description when submitting to each directory. Try to avoid as much duplicate content as possible.

Hey Rome,

I read that before I went on a big $ directory submission binge. Varied all the keyterms and went to town... Then I had doubts as I wasen't ranking that well for some major keyterms.

Went into googe analytics the other day... I don't just rank for "blog forum", "blogger forum" I rank for tones of variations and permutations of that main term. All thanks to the random anchor texts I chose on strong directories and other methods of promotion / advertising. Unfortunately some of the directories have been devalued now but I do not believe it has effected me. I will mainly submit to niche directories now as a result.

The art of directory submission is choosing terms you CAN RANK FOR. The best campaign is a waste if you are competing against players out of your league.

If you have a new blog and want to rank for "web hosting" ... Good luck

Know where you stand and what is available. Getting 70% of searches for a term searched 30% of the time is hands down better than 0% of a popular one.

"Blog Directory" on google... lol your above me most of the time or right around so you know how hard that nut is to crack

Rob

Where I'm at all depends if G is using their good or evil datacenter.

I just don't understand why people would work hard on developing their blog, but get lazy on submissions and submit the same thing at every dir they visit.

Nor do I. Maybe they don't know any better? That or they just want to "get it over with". Good things take time. The blog / site you're promoting should be like your relationship with future wife or husband. You need to build steadily and with care paying attention to the "little things" if you want it to last.

I get "fast" sometimes and always pay the price. Plan your work and work your plan at a modest pace for best results.

Definitely stay away from mass submission aka spam services. If you are too lazy or don't have the time pay someone to do it manually for you. Just make sure they have references.
