I haven't added my blog to any directories and really don't plan to add it ever. I can see the point of getting backlinks, but to me it makes more sense to find similar topical blogs and post comments on them as the relevance of the backlink to your own sites content has more of a meaning to me. Just my two pennies worth and not a slur on well run directories. Although they can be hard to find these days in amongst the get rich quick ones

So, just a feedback - since I started the thread I feel responsible for it

I did submitted to a few directories. I chose free ones, with a PG and a theme. I also put my link in my signature in forums I like and I'm active in. Finally, I signed up to a bunch of social bookmarking website (i.e Spicy, Technorati, MyBloglog etc.)

We'll see ! Traffic has been fairly good these last few days considering I've been on self-hosted WP for just a month today.

-join the top 10 blog directories only.
-don't join directories that have a PR 0
-never purchase links on blog directories. it's an absolute waste of money. Directories hardly bring you any visitors at all. All they do is provide SEO. Only if a directory has a high PR (7,8 etc) only then purchase listings.

Pretty hard to determine. I'd say as a general rule anything found in the first ~4 pages of google results for "blog directory" is good. It means that it ranks high for terms that it targets which is a good sign that it will help you rank for your terms as well. Often times it's not your site that ranks. It's your blog on THERE site that ranks for a key term which gets you the traffic either way.

Proud to be on page 2 when most of the others that are ahead of us are free ones with reciprocal so they are quite strong but often times spammy so who knows how long they will maintain there strength in the long run. I'd like to open reciprocals but the amount of submissions / junk submissions you get is through the roof. You could spend days going through submissions.

It can not be stressed enough that when submitting your blog to directories that you change up your title and description each time. Never have your description look like this.

Why bother putting hard work into your blog just to screw up the dir submissions.

Duplicate content sucks.
