At first I thought if I used different anchors I'd not rank well.

YOU CAN use similar anchors just change the description an if you want to be hardcore like I was change the anchors as well. Search Blog forum or any derivative... We're around

Good point. But when submitting to dirs are you relying on your keywords for ranking or the strength of the category your submitting to?

Based on my experience, blog (web) directories are a thing of a past. In my experiment so far I received negligible amount of traffic from them all together compared to social media sites which are a thing of the future. The blog dirs that I used can be found on the footer of the site.

More on I have a website listed in DMOZ since 1999, and it never sends any traffic whatsoever. It might have helped the site rank a little bit (PR3) and this could be the only purpose of the web dirs today (getting free links).

I definitely agree on the power of social bookmarking sites. Netscape is becoming one of my favorites.

I would recommend to ping your blog after each article rather than listing it in directories. One free ping service is Blog and ping | Pingoat for example.

The thing I don't like about directories with recipricols is that all the buttons are slightly different sizes, and all different colours, so I can't chose them to match my blog.

I have had a few visitors from them, probably about 3 from bloggeries so far, and am planning to go through another round of directory adding sometime, as I need to add corollax to a bunch too.

Directories aren't typically known for traffic as much as they relevant backlinks. I've yet to find a directory that serves me lot's of traffic.

I'm in DMOZ and I get ~7 uniques a month woohooo
