Promote blog in catalogs?

Hi all. I just found this forum and look forward to participate here.

I am working on a new blog and I will probably publish it in a couple of days. I have had some webpages before without being much aware over SEO, promoting etc, but I want to change that now. A SEO pack is already installed in my new blog, and I would also like to promote my blog in other ways.

Are there any big cataloges / listings that I should put my blog link in (and description of possible)? Are there any sites that gather articles from blogs in a feed and generate traffic for us that way?

What more than SEO and Facebook should I think of in order to spread the word as much as possible?

May I ask how you got the email subscriber thing that is in the header? I found a nice plugin for WordPress with subscriber funcion, but it only allows members to sign up for it, not anyone (including guests).
