Default Blog Commenting

I've read a lot about how commenting on blogs is a great way to boosting your own traffic. I've tried to do some research on the topic, but I just keep getting the same advice. So here are my questions...

1. Where do I find blogs to comment on that will actually help me too?
2. How does commenting actually help me?
3. Are there any sites I should use or good places to get started?

I'm not worried about making quality posts as I want to help out other bloggers as much as they help me. However, still being a blogging-noob I need some assistance. Thanks.

Normally, you'd comment on blogs that cover the same niche as you, or blogs whose readers might be interested in your niche. Hopefully that niche interests you, so that you enjoy the reading and commenting for its own sake, not just for your blog's sake.

To find those blogs, try Googling about your niche. That will probably lead you to the major blogs about your topic, and then you can browse through their blogrolls to find more.

Read the blogs and make intelligent comments, using an ID with a profile that points back to your blog. (Most blogging IDs have this option.) The comments can help your blog by:

- leading people who were impressed by your comments to click on your profile name, which normally leads back to your blog.

- inspiring the owners of the other blogs to return the favor by reading your blog and commenting on it. Comments are good for a blog - they're visible evidence that the blog is active.

- producing links to your blog (those profile-name links) that Google may find, that might increase the visibility of your blog to Google.

"Dofollow" blogs theoretically do a better job of this last part, though I increasingly have my doubts about that. And I disapprove of the whole dofollow craze anyway, because I don't approve of commenting for no other reason than to improve one's Google rank. Commenting to be a visible part of the community around your niche is dandy; commenting purely for search engine fodder just bothers me.

In addition to blog commenting, participating in forums related to your niche, again using a profile that points to your blog, can help in similar ways.

ChickenFreak is absolutely right. If you want to find blogs or forums to place comments , google is an easy way, but if you want to find those details about the quality of your traffic, you need to get a little bit advanced.

First, I suggest that you install a plugin on firefox called SEO Quake, it provides you with ranking information like alexa and pageranks. If you have links back from those sites to you, meaning you have high quality links, google will raise your serps rankings, that not only boosts your traffic but your visibility on the web has increased.

Not only that, you can build up links with specific keywords, if you can keep up with the quantity google will also raise your rankings, but thats alot of work. Go for quality first then go for the quantity of links.

The more links you have, the more possibilities you will have people reaching to you. It's a matter of reciprocity.

You can comment on my blog too! Share a few thoughts or two.

Wordpress has a tag surfer function which is pretty helpful.

That's a really good idea to use google and find blogs that have the same interests as you. It's easier to gain readership when you all enjoy talking about similar topics.

Never heard of this before. Then again, I don't really use many wordpress plugins. I think I'm missing out on a lot by forgetting to install those little doohickeys!

Chicken hit the nail on the head. That said it is time consuming and if you aren't going to leave insightful thoughts, it's a waste of time.

Also helps to be near the top of the page so get there early.
