I've been researching different ways to get backlinks and it made me start wondering how other people are successfully promoting their sites with backlinks. Would you mind sharing how you get your backlinks? Have you found any software that assists with the process? Hopefully everyone can benefit from this information!

Simple, backlink whenever possible. I generate backlinks from articles, blog comments, forum comments although there are other ways these have always worked for me. However, make sure you are involved, don't spam, and be part of communities and forums about your niche and other things that interest you. I've used SEO software and to be honest, I don't think it is worth it unless (as some say they do) they analyse your webpages and your competitors pages and tell you how to get to number one by beating them. I've seen them and they will say what you already now - keyword density, backlink and content. Personally, SEO software for me is OK for research but other than that it is not going to do the work for you. |

Most of the good links to me have come from what I'd call "spontaneous reciprocation". I link out to high quality sites in my niche whenever it's relevant - for example, if I review something, I link to the six other reviews on other blogs. And I have a blogroll of good blogs in my niche. Many of those people have noticed the link and been kind enough to reciprocate by linking to me. However, I'll certainly admit that this isn't a highly speedy method. I'm in no hurry, and the main purpose of this blog is to be a member of the community focused around my niche, so that's fine with me.I also comment and participate in forums in my niche. These are probably all nofollow, but they still show up in Google searches, and I get an occasional visitor from them. |

@chrisg: Great advice. I particularly liked the part where you mentioned "getting involved." After running a blog, I've lost count of how many comments have been marked as spam because people don't bother to read the article. I checked out the site from your sig. It looks great. Would you mind if I ask what tool you created it with?

@ChickenFreak Isn't it true that a 2-way link is not as valuable as a 1-way to Google? I'm trying to focus on one way links whenever possible to increase the value.

What exactly do you mean by 2 way links, and one way links? I haven't paid too much attention to getting back links. There are a few news references pointing to my site (SeattleTimes and a few others), and then a few blogs in the same niche have links to me (such as www.dailyshotofcoffee). I really like the dailyshotofcoffee blog so I automatically put a link to his site on my blog. We never even asked each other, it just happened that way, just exactly as ChickenFreak described above.

A one way link only points to your site (inbound) . A two-way link requires both parties to point at each other's site. From my research, it appears that Google gives more link juice to the one-way link than the two way.

It would also be pretty counter-community of me, and feel and look pretty selfish, to expect those blogs to link to me when my content is relevant to their post, if I don't link to them when their content is relevant to mine. Links are useful to the reader. Artificially refraining from linking in order to tweak your Google rating is, I think, a bad strategy in the end, because it makes your blog less useful to the reader.
