I feel like the answer to everything is always "content". This morning I realized that a respected blogger ("Brand Autopsy" blog) had written a blog about mystarbucksidea.com and had linked to one of my blog posts within his blog post. I thought it was wonderful. I had no idea it would happen. It just happened because my content fits a certain niche: There aren't that many Starbucks blogs creating unique and interesting content. I do not want to sound boastful!! However, 99% of the questions that come up on this site as they relate to marketing, links, and traffic, only come down to one thing: CONTENT

I have had this happen several times where people are writing about something and then they link to my blog.

And I have a blogroll of good blogs in my niche. Many of those people have noticed the link and been kind enough to reciprocate by linking to me.

However, I'll certainly admit that this isn't a highly speedy method.
I've been trying that as well, but so far haven't had any luck (only been blogging for two months though).

I also comment and participate in forums in my niche. These are probably all nofollow, but they still show up in Google searches, and I get an occasional visitor from them.
I've got a question - Google Webmaster shows that I have like 150 "links to my site." If I search Google for my domain name, it pulls up a good bit as well (a lot of comments on articles where I have typed my domain name as well).

But if I search Google with the link: method, it pulls up like 4.

What's that all about? Does the link: search only pull up dofollows? I actually know that I have more dofollow links out there than those 4 though.

I think though, if you think about it, your site has to somehow get out there in order for people to know about and thus reference it like they are doing in your example.

And I guess the answer to that is to have good content AND just be patient. (?)

Hmm. What search string are you using? When I search for links to my main blog, I use the format:

"myblogname.blogspot.com" -site:myblogname.blogspot.com

(There's no space between the dash and the "site:".)

Just offering it in case that format helps.

ChickenFreak & ScottK - I'm confused how it is possible to figure out how many links point in to a site??? I did a search of google for my domain name as suggested by ScottK and I get 18 pages of results, but some of it confuses my twitterings about StarbucksMelody with real results and there are even some bloggeries results mixed in.

I found this weird site here -
www.starbucksmelody.com web stats from Statbrain.com

Apparently it does estimates of visitor traffic and pulls a number of google links, but that can't be right. I can't possibly have 1100 links pointing to me. And its traffic estimates are off. My site traffic is not that high!

I don't know how to filter out things like Twitter links either. When I search for my links, I get my profiles on various websites, twitter links, stuff like that. And come to think of it, I _don't_ get all of the really good, solid links from sites in my niche.

Well, both Google Webmaster and searching with the link: method are supposed to work, but both give different results.

Also, a lot of people say Webmaster is slow sometimes in finding the links.

What are you experience with value of reciprocal links in terms of impact on own search rankings?

Always been careful to provide outbound links to sites with lower pagerank.

You have to give before you can recieve. Link to others and many will probably return the favour.
