Yes it is paying off - maps visits are logged as map.referrals in Google Analytics. Get about 5 - 15 visits daily from Google Maps. Booking Conversions about 33% to 50% of daily visits sometimes. I really need authoritative back links (did some 2 way links - but need more). Or go the Adwords route - as too much competition (hotels, booking agents, trip adviser reviews) - sponsored ads - and business maps plastered on the serps. Make about 10 - 20 NZ dollars a week. Would be more if listed on 1st page.
Other methods: Blog directories, article writing, keyword optimization (mainly long tails is where I get visits). Will join travel/immigration forums to display signature links.
Have not gone full social route yet (only Yahoo Answers and Mylot - "light" social activity). Contemplating Twitter, Facebook, but may get side tracked or bogged down too much - So no hurry. I have had visits/tweets (if that's what it is) from twitter (according to stats in GA) - but I have never been to The Twitter site.
