Let's assume for a moment that you have a new blog and the search engines are penalizing you for the first 6-12 months. Therefore, even with the best SEO practices, you will get minimal search engine traffic. What are the best ways to get traffic (other than search engines)? |

The best way is to get a link on a major site pointing to your blog. Not only will this help the search engines like you again, but it will also give you traffic.

social media has been great for me posting comments on other blogs is always been great, and link directories are always a good way but takes time and is really boring..lol

@Nathan By "major site", would you mean a PR4+ with a lot of traffic in your niche? : ) Hmm... any thoughts on the best way to get that? I've seen articles on people buying links like this, and other places where they say, "don't even try it". @Brandon I've got a Facebook account with 30 or so friends, but I get next to no traffic from it, maybe 3-5 per month. I'm currently working the posting angle while trying to focus on dofollow blogs. |

I personally find that comment posting on dofollow blogs with existing pagerank, and if allowed using a good 2 or 3 word search phrase instead of my personal name, works fine the topic of the blog post should ideally be related to your site, but it's not essential - just make sure your blog comment is related to the blog post I'm sure you've already found out that most of the big pagerank sites use worthlesss for SEO, nofollow external links (that's how they got good pagerank) - but any link is better than no link, and google expects to see a good mix of link types - so keep things natural looking |

Be active in forums. I'm getting much more traffic to one of my site from forums than search engines.

I've also found that posting on do-follow blogs gets traffic. If you choose a blog with a similar theme (there or there abouts) and your comment really adds value to the article or discussion, people really do click through to visit. |

Question and answer sites can bring in decent traffic.
