Tell me about your ads

I just looked at my my stats for the month, after being inspired by another thread

I have 1400 original views so far and 5200 pages visited. How do you count? by pages viewed, total views or original views?

Do you guys think I have enough views that I can start looking for ads? When does one do this? (I do have ads on there now, but they are all family members of myself or the other authors - i.e. not paying ones). If I do seek out ads how much should I charge them?

Note: I am leaning more toward niche market products rather than adsense - is that wise? unwise?

How did you know when it was time to start publishing ads? What venue did you use to get them?

If your site is a month old then you can add adsense without risking having the site sandboxed by google

Nathan's almost completed the script that will target amazon products based on page content, and correctly send clickthroughs to the right amazon site with the correct affiliate id based on where your visitor lives

I'd have amazon and adsense - but your site content must be commercial - i.e. there must be amazon products and adsense advertisers

If you discuss products that people might want to buy you can always put up ads selling those products. As Stephen said I'm working on an automatic system to help bloggers sell all sorts of different items via Amazon. They earn a percentage of each sale they drive.

I'll probably be releasing a beta version before the end of the week. Let me know if you are interested in participating.

I put google adsense up 3 days ago and have already made money.
It is free, I don't think it looks bad at all and it benefits me.

I do want to do the Amazon link, but I haven't done anything yet that can be linked to books - but I do have plans to do that.

You already have good readership, so try something out - cannot hurt anything.

Amazon actually sells more than books. They sell appliance, electronics, movies, etc. Basically they sell just about everything you can think of. And with commission you can make a lot of money if, for example, you sell a computer or something.

Nathan, I think I'd be interested in that. Let me come up with a post full of sample items. I'll send it to you (with the barcodes for the items). Let me know what code you'll need of mine to work with.

Also, give me a deadline, when do you want the info by?

There isn't really any deadline except on my part. I'm working on the site/system right now. The way it will work is when you sign up it will give you a dashboard with tools and instructions on how to put the ads up.

It will help you design an ad widget and/or a product list and put the ads up. But I need to finish the dashboard system.

The way it will work will probably be somewhat like the way I am doing things at Books For Sale - Reviews of Books to Buy

If you click on a book review at the bottom you see a collection of other related products for sale:

"Seekers - Smoke Mountain," by Erin Hunter | Books For Sale?

That feature is powered by the system I am programming. But before you can use it to help you sell products (be they toys, books, household items, etc) I need to finish the ad designer so that you can use it.

I hope to be able to open a beta release by the end of the week.
