I'm so guilty of not replying to my readers (to be fair, when I get busy, I'm guilty of not responding to my friends and family, too). I'm inspired to improve, though. I really *do* appreciate each and every comment.

Asking people to click on ads, anywhere, yours or someone else's, is a violation of Adsense TOS. Don't think they don't check. They'll shut you down faster than you will believe.

I always respond to comments as soon as I can and I'll visit their blogs too. Sometimes if they leave a question on my blog I will email them and let them know I've either answered it in a post or a comment.

I always reply to comments of my readers. And recently I have also started to comment on their blogs. By commenting on other people's blogs you get a lot more of comments yourself.

This is a great topic. I feel kind of weird about this subject because sometimes it seems like the blogging world is so full of insincerity and self-promotion that it's hard to make anything come across as heartfelt when you actually mean it. I love getting comments and I feel that because of that, I should always be giving out comments, but there are too many people out there who just skim through posts and leave comments hoping that the authors of the blogs they commented on will return the favor. It feels almost as bad to comment solely for the purpose of maintaining a loyal subscriber base. For this reason, I usually only comment when I am honestly amused or moved by a post. Luckily I have some really hilarious readers, so I still end up commenting fairly often. But there are always times when I don't have anything to say and I end up not commenting because I don't just want to write "great post! LOL!" Am I being silly? Is commenting for the sake of getting comments just a normal part of networking? How do you deal with this dilemma? |

If I replied to all my readers' comments it would be a bit overwhelming so I reply to about every 5 or every 10 comments. I do try to comment back on their blogs too. Give them something: I have already heavily bribed my readers into leaving comments. That's why there are so many comments. I periodically run twitter contests for Starbucks gift cards as the prizes.
