Default To Digg or not to Digg (reddit, stumble, etc)

I was wondering what peoples view are on having Digg, Reddit and Stumble links on posts? Is it a good idea or is it just a gimmick? People of the forum. What do you think about this subject?

(I ask because it's an interesting subject but also because I was thinking about adding them myself but there is part of me that is not so sure about the idea. something just does not feel right about it.)

There's a chance that it might not help out too much, but I certainly don't see how it could hurt.

People have different opinions, and mine are mixed!

However, one thing I will say that they do well - especially Digg - is provide you with higher ranking search results. So even though the traffic doesn't come to you on the first step, it is only two steps away from your site.

A lot of the articles I've submitted to Digg rank quite highly in searches (with links to the Digg site itself), whereas Google has decided to sandbox my site for the time being so it is nowhere to be found (even though it is still indexed)...so without Digg, and other similar things, my articles would be invisible.

Thanks.

Then my next question is; what is the best way to add them?

I don't make a habit of it but I will occassionally use the social networks to promote something.

From my experience, I get a lot more traffic from reddit than digg, but I do both anyways.

I'm a bit leery about submitting my own posts - I mean it sounds like a good idea and if you are a new blogger who else is going to submit them if you don't? But then you always worry submitting your own work too often and being penalized for it. I know several more established bloggers arrange to have a friend submit it for them but not every blogger has someone available that can or will do it for them.
