Default Tynt Tracer - Keep track of people copying stuff from your blog.

I just installed a fascinating Blogger addon. Whenever someone copies content from my blog it automatically tracks what was copied, and inserts an attribution link in the copied content. If someone copies text from my blog and pastes it into a Word document, another blog, etc it automatically includes a link back to the original source!

Try it out on Experiment Garden (listed in my signature)!

This addon really helps prevent theft, and makes sure that you get attribution for your writing. It also has a dashboard to keep track of what people copied from your blog.

If you want to install it yourself visit:

Tynt Tracer What’s being copied from your site?

Oh wow, it does. People can still manually delete that if they notice it, but for scrapers or people who aren't paying attention, that's a great way to make sure your content is being attributed appropriately.

Have you noticed it slowing down your site any like some addons do?

And too bad it won't do anything about images being copied.

Apparently it also keeps track of people copying images. At least that is what the information on the site says.

I have not noticed any slowdown on my blog. It still runs very fast and new page loads are almost instantaneous. I have the JavaScript located at the very bottom, just before the closing body tag so it had little or no effect on the appearance or speed of the page load.

Really? That's awesome. I think I'm going to try it out then, especially for my new site where I haven't messed with putting watermarks on my own photos yet, and content is more likely to be pulled from it than it would on QJ. Thanks, as usual, Nathan.

Ooo, so far I'm liking it. Do you know how often the stats actually update? It immediately started showing snippets that were copied up at the top, but there are no numbers at the bottom that are being recorded, so just curious if it was a daily update or more often?

It is a daily update, like Google Analytics.

The slideshow of currently copied snippets is sort of cheesy, but the real stats are great.

Just thought I would share the recent stats:

Visitors copied 1,067 words and 11 images on your site in this period.

1,212 page views
17 unique copies
11 images copied
1,067 words copied

These are the stats for the first day of having Tynt tracer installed on my blog. It is really quite amazing to think of all this activity that I would otherwise have no way of keeping track of.

I did have pretty amazing stats yesterday. To be honest it usually isn't that spectacular. Yesterday I just enjoyed a burst of success on a popular science/programming/hacking news site.

That attracted a lot of people, hence the 1200 page views.

My average visitor count is usually 100-150 a day.
