I think the number one thing to do is put a prominent feed subscription icon and links. For example, on Experiment Garden, I have at least five subscription links on every post page, with a link below each post that says "If you enjoy reading Experiment Garden" please subscribe. On Inkweaver Review I use a different technique. I have a prominent email subscription form right at the top where everyone can see it. I push email subscriptions a lot more than feed reader subscriptions on that blog.
