With google adsense they have a complicated formula to determine how much a publisher gets paid for clicks - including bounce rate, time on site, but probably the most important is the percentage of clicks that actually result in a sale (google get feedback from advertisers)

eCPM is simply "earnings per 1,000 impressions" - i.e. if if you had an adsense channel "cats" and got paid 12 dollars for 3,000 adsense impressions on cats pages - but another channel "dogs" got paid 10 dollars for 2,000 adsense impressions on dogs pages - then "dogs" pages is where you should concentrate on getting more visitors to - as you are earning more per 1,000 visitors ($5.00 eCPM)) whereas "cats" is only earning $4.00 eCPM

So although cats paid out more than dogs, dogs is actually more profitable - you just need to get more visitors for dogs
