Default Directories (for dummies)

Ok, so I've seen people talk about directories on this forum and DP and I don't understand what exactly they are and the purpose they serve. So tell me please, how and why should I submit my site to a directory? Who visits directories? Is there a list of good directories, I have a budget of exactly £0 so they must be free, also why are some paid and others free?

Appreciate any answers.

Brilliant, well that cleared up a lot of stuff. I know I could've done research on my own but I thought I'd be a little lazy and ask on the forum instead.

Thanks kiviniar.

Great article Kivinar and Mothership I always start threads to things I could probably find on the internet. Sometimes it's just alot easier and you find a more targeted result kinda like what happened here.

Ya i agree with Rob, the best sources that i have got are via forum threads.

It alwasy helps to have fellow webmaster give out their preferences and experiences.

Nice to know that the article helped you

Agreed. There are no bad questions on webmaster forums as long as they are asked in a positive way. Some people ask questions in condescending ways (don't ask me why) but they do and they solicit condescending responses.

If you genuinely have a question just ask it nicely and I've found people who frequent forums often find it hard to not reply... Or am I just speaking for myself? who knows
