The great thing is that even though you didn't get as great of results as you'd hoped for on a specific day or didn't get as high up in the ranks, you're fairly high up and getting hits from it.....which will continue to trickle over time. Who knows who else is talking about the Very Hungry Caterpillar or looking up information about it at any given time? It's great to let your link rise in ranks regardless.

Cool Idea and it's also very creative way to bring traffic to the blog.

Great idea. Why not plan ahead and build links now so that when holiday events come up, you are ready to capitalize. It is kind of a gamble which things Google will do special logos for, but I'm sure you could find a list of famous authors, painters, scientists, etc. and plan a series of posts to coincide with their birthday.

excellent use of the resources that everyone has available. I am impressed that you could initiate such a marketing ploy and track it at the same time. Good luck with that one post. I am afraid that now, every time you write a post, it might be done the same way, but that is not a good thing. Its one of the big steps to becoming a good blogger.

Although I really hope you opt to make sure things fit with your blog in some way or another instead of just writing whatever for the SERPs.
