Hello everyone, I'm still fairly new to the blogging game, and I keep reading everywhere that a great way to get traffic is with backlinks to my blog. I'm not sure i understand how to go about this.....do I comment on other blogs and such and just post my URL address? If anyone can explain the proper procedure for putting backlinks to my blog on the internet........in simple "Backlinks For Dummies" terms, it would be greatly appreciated. |

Hmmm I might not be the best person to explain but I'll try to help out anyway. Backlinks are basically any links to your blog from other websites, some are Dofollow (meaning they help improve your rankings in search engines, Google etc) and some are not. Backlinks can bring traffic from direct clicks too, so building backlinks is a great way of increasing traffic. Some common sources of backlinks are blog comments (most blogs let you leave a name & URL when you comment), links in forums (such as your Bloggeries signature), links on other's blogrolls or being mentioned in blog posts, links from social bookmarking sites like Digg.com plus a whole bunch of other sources. So when commenting, don't just comment with your URL but make a genuine comment and either a) leave your URL in the URL box provided or b) end your comment with your name & URL if no box is available. Hope this helps. |

Well, I think the focus of backlinks is to get organic (search engine) traffic because that's the visitors that will make you money. For instance, if you blog about something popular and you have hundreds of backlinks to your site, more than likely your popular post will appear on the frontpage for that popular search term. Lol... I hope I made some sense. |

One of method that I really love is to submit your blog to Mybloglog and Technorati. They gives real dofollow backlinks.

A lot of the comment sections on forums have a "nofollow" which means that it will not affect your pageranking. My recommendation would be to update and ping regularly with a tool like AutoBuzzer |

I've got a couple of posts that might help you out: What is a Backlink? | Freelance Pirate What is Specific Linking? | Freelance Pirate How to Expand Your Online Presence | Freelance Pirate Blog commenting is seriously an awesome way to generate some nice links. I would suggest commenting regularly on one or two blogs to get into a top commentator list, and doing some other commenting on do-follow blogs. Start small, form a habit, and go up from there.

Good advice! Hands down best way IMO is link bait if you can. It's a gamble though because you can spend HOURS making the perfect bloggery and then release it. If it gets spread like wildfire AWESOME; if it doesn't.... You may of been better off manually building links through some of the other techniques mentioned here...

Backlinks can be beneficial but you have to watch out for spammers who misuse the opportunity.
