I've mentioned this a time or two around other boards, and I'm surprised at how many people don't know about this. You can be updated via email anytime google adds a page on your site to their index. This is all you have to do. As many people know, if you type in: site:Portland SEO Consulting :: Jeremy Morgan's SEO blog into the google search bar you can see every page google has spidered for your site. So simply go to the Google Web Alerts page, and add an alert for this search, select comprehensive, and "as it happens". This way every time google adds a page, you are notified instantly! This also works for links as well, using link:jeremymorgan.com (replace with your site of course). I hope this helps, it can be annoying sometimes, but it's a nice way to monitor your progress!!

Very cool, I must say I do routinely check the number of indexed pages so this could be cool. Thing is every time I check it's always switching depending on which server or other factors. Sometimes my indexed pages are up then for weeks they seem to decline; it's mind boggling really! You think it's constantly dancing, or you're on different servers or a mix of both to explain the range in indexed pages? That said do yours tend to go up and down or stay somewhat constant? I do however have an alert for the term "Bloggeries" which I find really interesting.

Nice tip, but it is not comprehensive. Google Alerts, like all other Google apps, is selective. It will return results based on a number of factors, including your past browsing history, what sites you clicked through on the Alert, your IP address, etc. I've done testing with this, using the same alert on different accounts, and get different results (although they are very similar). Also, Yahoo Sitesearch is better for checking backlinks via the link:yoursite URL here method. The only way to really know what Google has indexed is if you have Webmaster tools set for that site.

| I do think its a bit of a "dance". The only explanation I can think of for different rankings on different servers is simple synchronization issues. Most of mine level out after a few days. As for the serps changing frequently in general, I think that's just the nature of the game. Most of my serps change by 1-2 spots each way daily. Only a few of my really good serps seem to stay at number 1, and they're competitive too.

| I have not noticed these inconsistencies at all. I don't doubt what you're saying, but I've had pretty good results with it so far. I do usually open the emails though, but i don't necessarily click on them.
