Default I have heard that link exchange is discouraged by google.

Is link exchange really that good of an idea? I have heard numerous takes on whether it is a good idea or not to participate in link exchanges. One opinion I heard was that link exchange is ok if it is with relavent sites that add value to your readers. Another opinion I heard was that link exchange is ok up to a point...the point being not more than 20 link exchanges. The last opinion I heard was that link exchage is a bad idea period and that google frowns upon it. And if you take part in link exchange you will eventually receive penalties.

What are others opinions on this topic? And if you are a real estate webmaster have you seen people recieve penalties for link exchanges?

How and why would google penalize you for link exchanges?

My take is the more people that see your site the better.

You make a great point. I'm by no means an expert on the topic but to my current understanding link exchanges are a widely used acceptable activity. Due to the social nature of blogs they are even more so in this domain.

If you look at many of the top blogs in many niches; many have huge blogrolls. Search engine traffic is amazing but how often do you go from one site you find cool to another one through a link on the first one? I do it all the time and that is why if you run a quality site it's important that you only link to places you'd proudly send your current readership. The sites you link to reflect you and your integrity on the web.

When doing blog roll exchanges think relevance and traffic. Is this blog relevant and will you get any traffic? Is it something that will add value to your readership? Is it a quality resource?

Anyone else's thoughts?

Exactly. This why I find it hard to believe that Google would penalize you for this. Link exchanges can be one of the best ways of getting traffic. If your blog is somewhat successful and you become "friends" with another very successful blog in your niche, exchange links, you can receive a high amount of traffic.

Generally when I find a new blog or site I will check out the sites they link to.
Link exchanges have been around since the very beginning and is always a good idea to try and get other high traffic relevant sites to link you.

Default Re: I have heard that link exchange is discouraged by google.

I have good experience with Google. Google likes blog and Link exchanges . the better one is the exchange between three websites A link to B and B link to C and C link to A.
Relevant sites that is good because it’s work as a vote from your competitors to your website.
No more than 20 that correct.
The problem with link exchanges is that if exchange with a website that receive penalties from Google you will get penalty.

LoL now I see why in another thread you are suggesting that Bloggeries is expensive.

I would not pay a dime for this service. What "GOOD" will tones of links from sites with no trust do? You're better getting listed on 1 trusted site than thousands of low traffic questionably trusted sites IMO. Also will you be using a UNIQUE description or just the same one for 30-100 directories? Also if you Guarantee people will get listed it means there is 0 editorial integrity. Editorial integrity is one of the primary components of a quality directory...

If you want to sell this service please make a thread for it. Further more link exchanges are fine as long as they are natural, same niche or close to it. Google can tell when sites link to each other that have NO REASON to link except for engine benefits. Build a site for users and you're building one for search engines.

I agree that it is all about quality of the sites that you link to. It could be that linking to hundreds of low quality blogs will lower your page ranking because they don't contribute as much to your page ranking as you contribute to theirs.

The best way is always to link up, or at least do link exchanges with blogs that have a similar or slightly lower page ranking. Then Google isn't going to penalize you.

One of the top real estate agent forums on the web is filled with hundreds of agents who recieved penalties for link exchanges. This makes me weary of link exchanging. I wonder if it only becomes an issue for high dollar industries that are known to try and manipulate search results.
