Default Top Commentator Plugin - Same Name Different URL - Does that Count?

Basically I'm changing my URL on a blog I frequently comment. This is my question:

When the top commentators plugin calculates who the top commentators are does it go by name, url, email or all three?

Basically I'm still using:

Bloggeries
*MY EMAIL*

Now for the Change:

http://www.bloggeries.com goes to http://www.bloggeries.com/forum

So my question is this: Will these new comments count towards my total score or must everything be the same?

I'd love to know as if it changes than I"ll keep just the bloggeries URL as I already have lots!

Thanks to anyone who can help me out and a big chunk of green

Rob

No. The top commenters plugin checks it by name, rather than by e-mail or URL. It picks a url at random (or I believe it is random) to be linked in, so chances are that bloggeries.com will be the linked one (as it has more weight, it appears more in the MySQL DB)

To be honest, Top Commenters would do better if it searched via e-mail or by URL. The reason being is that if - for yourself - you are referring to yourself as "Rob" when you comment, anybody else who comments under the name Rob adds to your total, rather than starting their own.

Something that - I believe - could be easily fixed. I'd look into it if I wasn't so busy.

Hi Rhys,

Wow, that is a much more detailed response that I expected so thanks alot. I understand how the plugin works now.

In theory if I start changing always to /forum eventually that will outweigh the top level domain and hence make the switch.

Thanks again for laying it out in a simple easy to understand manner.

Rob

It's also fairly easy for a blog owner (who is conversant with using phpMyAdmin and SQL) to switch your old URLs to the new one. I've done that recently for someone who switched from Blogger to their own domain name.

That's most useful if it's a do-follow blog, of course.
