A favicon (short for 'favorites icon'), also known as a website icon, a page icon or an urlicon, is an icon associated with a particular website or webpage. A web designer can create such an icon, and many recent web browsers can then make use of them. Browsers that support favicons may display them in the browser's URL bar, next to the site's name in lists of bookmarks, and next to the page's title in a tabbed document interface.
In Firefox, when you use tabs, the favicon is what distinquishes one tab from another.. so you need your own little ico for your website.. basically, any .png file of 16x16 dimensions can be a favicon.. (just rename it favicon.ico and put it in the root of your blog directory) I also have a utility that will convert any .jpg file to a favicon at: Favicon Generator Have fun with it, I do ![]() |

Great post, flavicons help distinguish your site from others especially in firefox if you have alot of open tabs. The link you sent isn't working though. Typically my friend has made them for me. we have one at www.bloggeries.com but I'd love to see the generator.
Thanks for sharing, Rob

I thought you could make the favicon larger and the browser would resize it.

I assumed that at first and have never actually verified but i was instructed if you took too large an image it would never look right when shrunk to the level it is so it's best to design one as it's only so many pixels' wide and tall.

i agree. favicon represents your site and your business, considering its design and color scheming.

I wrote about having favicons several months ago and MyFavatar was a good generator at that point. It looks like they've expanded into the social networking fad (they used to 'just' have the generator), but it's likely still a simple resource to use.
