We frequent a few forums so that can be a good way to attract visitors, I submitted a press release when I started the blog which takes a while to filter through results but does help with backlinks.
I also submitted my press release to Entreprenuer which was
featured in their blog which threw quite a few visitors. Depends on who you are targetting.
I have also sent out about 50 emails letting other people with popular blogs in the same genre know about our new blog in case it may be of interest to their readership. There is no point in starting to promote your blog until you maybe have 10 really good posts as you'll only get one crack at getting someone ot look over your site and bookmark it.
