Giant Bits – Blog Review

Friday, April 4th, 2008

New York Giants Superbowl ChampionsWell, if you are a Giants fan still reveling in the glory from the SuperBowl, then you may be happy to know there is still a place you can hang out to dish about your favorite team. There is a blog on the New York Giants, called Giant Bits. The blogger is working hard to keep football fans hunger satiated with all there is to know about the Giants. While the blog revels in the Superbowl victory, this is not just another Superbowl dish. Read his recent bloggeries to find out: Coach Spagnuolo to Stay with the Giants, A Giant Upset: Super Bowl XLII Champions, Super Bowl XLII: Giants at New England, Super Bowl XLII: Giants vs Patriots, Surprise Trip to Arizona, Awasom Arrested, Me-Ki Barber and Why These Giants are Better Without Him, Super Bowl XLII and Me-Ki Barber, Specter Calls for Congressional Hearing on “Spygate”, and Knight Signs with Gmen; Other Free Agent News.

New York Giants Superbowl ChampsThe blog is very easy to read, well organized, and easy to navigate. Bloggeries are centralized and there are both left and right navigation bars. In the left navigation bar you will find a host of sites to buy NFL tickets such as CTC Tickets, Vivid Seats, The Seats. Here you will also find a Categories Menu with only one category called ‘UnCategorized’, Archives Menu, Recent Posts Menu, and Related Blogs Menu. In the right navigation system is some AdSense. Each bloggery is well laid out and associated with relevant pictures. I like the theme of the blog as well, it reads as if it was the sports section of the newspaper in both appearance and in tone of content.

Overall I give this blog a 4/5, and have just a few suggestions. The blog looks great from an appearance and navigation perspective and scores well on content as well. I would suggest the blogger add some categories to the categories menu just to make navigation a little bit simpler than it is at this point. Judging by his recent posts, I would even suggest categories such as Coaching, Injury List, Superbowl Stats, Players, and etc. The blog is missing an About page, but given the function of an about page, I don’t think this blog needs it unless he wants to connect with his readers on a more personal level. It is pretty clear what the blog is about, but some readers may enjoy a little About information to add a more personal feel to the blog. Overall, though not a Giants fan (my apologies) I enjoyed reading this blog and think that any Giants fan would benefit from this blog, as much as the writer would benefit from that readership.

Fishing for Big Sharks – Blog Review

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Fishing for Big Sharks Blog ReviewBloggeries is going to review an interesting personal / sports blog and this one is going to focus on the topic of shark fishing. You can find this blog, called Fishing for Big Sharks. This blog is strictly about shark fishing, and emphasizes that the fishing is for BIG sharks, mostly catch and release. The blogger is known as Christo and writes from Mosselbay, South Africa. You can find out all there is you need to know about Christo and his interest through any of his most recent bloggeries: Light Tackle Boat Fishing, Amazing Shark Video, Back on the Beach and smiling, Violent Great White Shark Attack, Big Fish….Nice Surprise, Getting Withdrawal Symptoms, Fishing the Winter Blues, Hound Sharks at Santos Beach, Sharks Going Wild Again, and Really Bad Weather Again.

untitled+(284+x+425) Fishing for Big Sharks Blog ReviewNavigation on this blog is very straightforward as the blog is laid out very nicely and well organized. The header contains a beautiful shark picture, and the theme is black text on white background with a blue border lending much oceanic appeal to the entire blog. Links also are highlighted in blue. Bloggeries are left marginalized and there is a right navigation bar that contains an about and profile page, categories menu, AdSense, Google Search Bar, Archives Menu, and a healthy list of fishing and useful sites. You will also find here an extensive list of fish and shark pictures, sunset and nature photos, video clips on fishing and sharks, and some news bulletins pertaining to sharks. The categories menu is very extensive with categories divided into different shark types as well as some categories designated to fishing methods itself.

I will go with a 3 for this blog at this point. At the time of review the blog scores well for navigation, appearance, and content, however activity is really hurting the blog scores right now. This blog definitely needs more frequent updating in order to be a success, as bloggeries are coming in only every few weeks at the moment. When this blog was reviewed, the last bloggery was posted on September 7th. However, this blog is very aesthetically appealing for its niche, and is very well organized and easy to navigate. Adding to the appearance scores for the blog are the extensive and beautiful pictures that the blogger provides in just about every bloggery. If you are a nature lover, you will truly enjoy the aesthetic appeal of this site. The content is well written as well, and given that this is a personal blog, the personal voice the blogger gives to its readers is very well written. If this blogger is able to update his blog a little more frequently, he should see some success from it.

A Kona Hawaii Scuba Diver and Dive Operator Blabbers On – Blog Review

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

rate4 A Kona Hawaii Scuba Diver and Dive Operator Blabbers On Blog ReviewWell if this blog doesn’t make you want to up and get another hobby, I don’t know what will. This blog is called “A Kona Hawaii Scuba Diver Blabbers On” and while it sounds kind of rambly and not relevant to you, don’t let that keep you from looking. This blog is a nice little getaway to the island of Kailua-Kona if you can not get there yourself. Steve is the author of this blog and he is a Kona Scuba Instructor and Dive Charter operator. His blog is a little bit of ramblings of his experiences in both of these fields. If you have no interest in these fields, you will still want to have a look at some of the stunning photography he has listed on this site, you will feel like you are in Hawaii just from the site’s photos. His previous posts will give you an excellent example of that: “I found this unusual fish the other week…”, “Woke up at 4AM to a full moon over Hawaii this morning…”, “Woo hoo!! Oregon State University Beavers just win 2nd consecutive college world series!!”, “Wanna Dive’s New Dive boat is coming along”, “Hawaii’s otters have been migrating apparently”, “Been getting some rain lately” and so much more. In fact, the full moon post has an actual picture of the full moon he writes about. It is just breathtaking, as are the many other pictures but you have to go see them yourself.

Scuba Diving Kona Hawaii Navigation on this site could not be simpler. The posts are centered down a background that is very Hawaiian. The main background is a pretty royal blue wavy pattern, and the centered background is a forest green with yellow text. There is a right navigation bar that includes a links menu, archive menu, links menu specific to the area of Kona, and a diving poll. There is also some advertising here, and I love the way Steve advertises. It is completely categorized into sections like Guide Books for example, so you almost can’t even tell it is advertising. He also has an animal of the day in the right nav bar which today, is a beautiful Argentine Grey Fox. And if you don’t quite yet feel the full Hawaiian jive, then you can check out the date and time stamp set in Kona time to give yourself a bit of setting. I really like the way he uses his voice in his writing as well, he signs off almost every post personally, for example – Later, Steve. So you get a true personal voice from this author and his experiences. I would not mind seeing more of an about page, though, the blog is so personal the entire blog almost functions as one in itself. The pictures are gorgeous, and relevant, and they are in just the right amount.

This blog will get a 4 from me, it is clearly doing well and my hat goes off to Steve’s longeivity. The blog has been around for years! I would suggest some more regular posting, as they are coming in about once weekly. Though it is clear this blogger is very busy, maybe just a dive tip of the day thrown in here and there would help. I also wouldn’t mind seeing a category menu which would also help bring in targetted technorati traffic more effectively. There are enough topics just from the posts on the main page that would allow for different categories, and it would organize the blog a little more. Otherwise, I think the blog is a fantastic one, and one of my favorite sporting blogs I have seen yet. I hope this blog does very well, so far it is on the right track.
